When they arrived in front of us they halted, and one of them, pointing with her wand towards the crouching figure of Gagool, cried out:

"Mother, old mother, we are here."

"Good! good! good!" piped out that aged iniquity. "Are your eyes keen, Isanusis"(witch doctresses), "ye seers in dark places?"

"Mother, they are keen!"

"Good! good! good! Are your ears open, Isanusis, ye who hear words that come not from the tongue?"

"Mother, they are open."

"Good! good! good! Are your senses awake, Isanusis (бодрствуют ли ваши чувства; awake — не спящий, проснувшийся; бдительный, настороженный) — can ye smell blood (можете ли вы почувствовать запах крови; smell — обоняние; запах, аромат), can ye purge the land of the wicked ones (можете ли вы очистить землю от нечистых; wicked — злой, безнравственный; грешный, нечистый) who compass evil against the king and against their neighbors (которые замышляют зло против короля и своих соседей; to compass — окружать; замышлять, затевать)? Tarry not, ye vultures (не мешкайте, вы хищницы; vulture — гриф /птица/); see the slayers (посмотрите на убийц)" — pointing to the ominous group of executioners behind (указывая на зловещую группу палачей позади /себя/) — "make sharp their spears (заострите их копья); the white men from afar are hungry to see (белые люди /прибывшие/ издалека жаждут увидеть; hunger — голод; жажда, сильное желание; to hunger — голодать; жаждать, сильно желать). "Mother, we can."

"Then go! Tarry not, ye vultures; see the slayers" — pointing to the ominous group of executioners behind —"make sharp their spears; the white men from afar are hungry to see. Go."

With a wild yell the weird party broke away in every direction (с диким воплем эта странная компания бросилась во всех направлениях: «в каждом направлении»; to break away — отрывать, разрывать; разойтись, рассеяться), like fragments from the shell (словно осколки раковины), and, the dry bones round their waists rattling as they ran (и высохшие кости на их поясах загромыхали, когда они бежали), made direct for various points of the dense human circle (направившись к различным точкам этого плотного круга, заполненного людьми: «человеческого круга»; to make for —направляться). Suddenly the end came (внезапно наступил конец). With a shriek she sprang in and touched a tall warrior with the forked wand (с криком она вскочила и коснулась высокого воина раздвоенным жезлом).
