Just before sundown we perceived a small company of men advancing towards us from the direction of Loo, one of whom bore a palm leaf in his hand as a sign that he came as a herald.

As he came, Ignosi, Infadoos, one or two chiefs, and ourselves went down to the foot of the mountain to meet him. He was a gallant-looking fellow, with the regulation leopard-skin cloak.

"Greeting (приветствую /вас/)!" he cried as he came near (прокричал он, когда подошел ближе); "the king's greeting to those who make unholy war against the king (король приветствует тех: «приветствие короля тем», кто ведет нечестивую войну против него: «короля»); the lion's greeting to the jackals who snarl around his heels (лев приветствует шакалов, рычащих у его ног; heel — пятка)."

"Speak (говори)," I said.

"These are the king's words (вот слова короля). Surrender to the king's mercy ere a worse thing befall ye (сдайтесь на милость короля, прежде чем вас постигнет худшая /доля/). Already the shoulder has been torn from the black bull (лопатка уже была вырвана у черного быка), and the king drives him bleeding about the Camp (и король уже гоняет его, истекающего кровью, по лагерю)."

"Greeting!" he cried as he came near; "the king's greeting to those who make unholy war against the king; the lion's greeting to the jackals who snarl around his heels."

"Speak," I said.

"These are the king's words. Surrender to the king's mercy ere a worse thing befall ye. Already the shoulder has been torn from the black bull, and the king drives him bleeding about the Camp."

"What are Twala's terms (каковы условия Твалы)?" I asked, for curiosity (спросил я, из любопытства).

"His terms are merciful, worthy of a great king (его условия милосердны, и достойны великого короля). These are the words of Twala (вот слова Твалы), the one-eyed (одноглазого), the mighty (могущественного), the husband of a thousand wives (мужа тысячи жен), lord of the Kukuanas (повелителя кукуанов), keeper of the great road (Solomon's Road) (хранителя великой дороги (дороги царя Соломона)), beloved of the strange ones who sit in silence at the mountains yonder (the Three Witches) (возлюбленного Неизведанных, которые сидят в молчании там, в горах /Трех Ведьм/), calf of the black cow (теленка черной коровы), elephant whose tread shakes the earth (слона, чья поступь сотрясает землю), terror of the evil-doer (грозы злоумышленников; terror — ужас, страх; "гроза", то, что вселяет ужас), ostrich whose feet devour the desert (страуса, чьи ноги пожирают пустыню), huge one (гигантского), black one (черного), wise one (мудрого), king from generation to generation (короля из поколение в поколение)! these are the words of Twala (вот слова Твалы): `I will have mercy and be satisfied with a little blood (я сжалюсь и буду удовлетворен малой кровью; mercy — милосердие, сострадание; прощение, помилование; to have mercy on smb. — щадить кого-либо, сжалиться над кем-либо). One in every ten shall die (один /человек/ из /каждых/ десяти должен будет умереть), the rest shall go free (остальные останутся свободными; to go — идти, ходить; оставаться в каком-либо положении); but the white man Incubu, who slew Scragga, my son (но белый человек /по имени/ Инкубу, который убил моего сына Скраггу), and Infadoos, my brother, who brews rebellion against me (и Инфадус, мой брат, который замышляет восстание против меня; to brew — варить/пиво/; замышлять/мятеж, восстание/), these shall die by torture as an offering to the silent ones (они должны будут умереть в муках и принесены в качестве жертвы Молчаливым; offering — предложение; жертвоприношение).' Such are the merciful words of Twala (таковы милостивые слова Твалы)."

"What are Twala's terms?" I asked, for curiosity.

After consulting with the others a little I answered him in a loud voice (немного посовещавшись с остальными, я ответил ему громким голосом; to consult — советоваться, консультироваться; обсуждать, совещаться), so that the soldiers might hear, thus (так, чтобы воины могли слышать):

After consulting with the others a little I answered him in a loud voice, so that the soldiers might hear, thus:

Now go, ere we whip thee away, and beware how ye lift a hand against such as we."

The herald laughed loud (герольд громко рассмеялся).

"Ye frighten not men with such swelling words (вы не испугаете людей такими чванливыми словами; to swell — надуваться, распухать; важничать, чваниться; swelling — опухающий, набухающий; чванливый, напыщенный)," he cried out. "Show yourselves as bold tomorrow, O ye who darken the sun (покажите себя такими же храбрыми завтра, о вы, которые можете потушить солнце). Be bold, fight, and be merry (будьте храбрыми, сражайтесь и веселитесь), before the crows pick your bones till they are whiter than your faces (прежде чем вороны обглодают ваши кости, и они станут белее ваших лиц; to pick — собирать, снимать/плоды/; клевать, поклевывать/о птицах/). The herald laughed loud.

Be bold, fight, and be merry, before the crows pick your bones till they are whiter than your faces. Farewell; perhaps we may meet in the fight; wait for me, I pray, white men." And with this shaft of sarcasm he retired, and almost immediately the sun sank.
